garden time

With all of our energies going towards the house rebuild, the garden really hadn't gotten much attention since the fire and was in need of some serious love! Luckily, all of the fruit trees and the greenhouse survived the fire. I still am amazed by that. There was quite a clean up job to do, but everyone pitched in weeding, hauling, raking and mulching. We are planting practically every vegetable we can think of and we'll see how much we get past the critters.

french loafs

Now that I have a kitchen to speak of it's time to bake! I love to cook, and I've been told I'm pretty good at it, but I am not an avid baker by any stretch. I can whip up a pretty mean chocolate chip cookie, but bread is a whole other story. Inspired by my hot off the press dream kitchen and not one to be intimidated easily, I jump right in, attempting the french baguette. The results were surprisingly good for a first try.

the secret's out

Here's a little confession: we're not really a farm...at least not yet. I have to say I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, seeing how this blog is called malibu family farm and all. But I'm thinking ahead. You won't find any livestock or long rows of heartily growing veggies yet, but we're getting there. We are literally re-starting things from the ground up. Goal number one was to get our house back. After three long years we have finally finished all the endless planning, decision making and building and we couldn't be happier. As anyone who's done it knows, being your own contractor is a full time job in and of itself. It certainly has it's headaches, but in the end was a fulfilling experience for us.

Next up: we transform the garden!

Here's a fast forward of our progress:
